According to Charaka there is nothing on the earth which is not medicine. That’s why Ayurveda considers all substances as medicine, if used for specific purposes in an appropriate way. It’s a complete science of herbal plants. . Ayurvedic drugs, especially herbs are prescribed in different pharmaceutical forms to get maximum therapeutic effect.
Dravyaguna is an integral part of Ayurveda, which deals comprehensively about rasa, guna virya, vipaka and prabhava (pharmacokinetics and pharmcodynamics) of herbs. This branch also deals with identification, collection, storage, and preservation of raw materials of plant origin.
Medicinal plants form a vital link in maintenance of health and disease either as food or medicine. Consequently, a meticulous knowledge of medicinal plants is essential for health and effective treatment. Dravyaguna, a branch of Ayurveda, deals with the study of medicinal plants used for disease prevention & cure.
Dravya-Guna Dept. is related to theoretical and practical study of medicinal plants. Morphological and microscopic practical’s are taught to students, section cuttings of various plants are taken for identification of dravyas. Our College has big botanical garden where about 1300 various plant species are cultivated.
